After persuading Steve a few beers the night before a marathon
always helps you sleep we were woken by the alarm sounding at 6am.
We all climbed into the 40-50 coaches and drove through the
Highlands, a memorable sight in itself at 7 in the morning. We meet
Neil and Phil in the toilet queue, where else, almost missing the
start.
A 40 strong bagpipe band sounded us off a truly inspiring
sound. An undulating start, well first 10 miles, head long into the
wind and rain thankfully the route flattened after about 11 miles to
be replaced with cracking views all around and overlooking the Loch
below. We passed through the villages of Foyers, Invercraig and
Dores. As we approached Dores the sun finally came out, joining us
for the rest of the race. With beautiful views over the Loch to die
for I relented, stopped for a few minutes and took a few pictures -
Stunning!!
A beast of a hill at 18 miles was followed by a few miles of
flat then up again with a few welcome flat miles onto the finish
line in Burgt Park. A really stunning marathon setting we celebrated
in true Scottish style a Chinese meal, a few beers and a Highland
fling. |
