LITTLEDOWN HARRIER'S MONTHLY RESULTS UPDATE - APRIL 2011

APRIL 2011 Monthly Running Update

*** Member’s ONLY Enclosure ***

*** Next Club Championship CC and Dorset Road Race League DRRL race ***

 Purbeck 10K Wednesday 8 May 2011-7:30pm

Sad news, David Foreman passed away this month.

Dave was a long standing member of Littledown Harriers and a former Club Chairman.

Running was a real passion for him and he told some fascinating tales of his training all over the world - his work in the petro-chemical industry took him far and wide.

An uncompromising chap from the North East of England, long distance running suited Dave’s character. His achievements were many but most worthy of note was probably being 3rd over 65 year old in the London Marathon with an incredible time of 3 hours 18 minutes!

Injury eventually prevented him from running but he would turn up and support fellow Harriers at races - I recall him cheering people on at the Bay Race each Spring and one year as I was starting to stuggle around London his booming Geordie accent could be clearly heard urging me on. Running Clubs need characters like Dave Foreman.

Dave leaves a widow, Dorothy. He will be cremated at Bournemouth Crematorium on Friday15 April at 1.30 pm afterwards with an open invitation to all at the St Leonards Hotel (on the A31 near St Ives).

I have organised a suitable tribute on behalf of the club.

I apologise to anyone I’ve missed off, Well run to everyone…                                                           Barry

Report: Some great performances in the Bournemouth Bay Runs this year.  In the half marathon I counted 22 Harrier men in the results, and 4 more in the 10km race (apologies if I missed anyone).

Half Marathon - Gary Worsley leading the Harriers back in 1:23.10, then Mark Packer 1:24.01, Jon Elliott right back on form in 1:24.20, and PB's for Wayne 1:25.22, Stuart 1:27.28 and Mike Pugh 1:30.09, also a PB for Giles 1:30.53?  Also fantastic to see Steve Scally back from his injury and all the chaps running in great form ahead of their forth coming marathons - Steve Shuck, Simon Davies, Mike Terry, Stewart Cull...

10km - more great performances, Harrier's 2010 Champion Adrian Bonner finishing 7th overall in 36:12, Vincent and Jim Cowdroy getting some speed work in ahead of their marathons (41:25 and 42:8 respectively), and was that you Ryan (44:44?)

Again sorry if I missed anyone, but collectively best of luck to all marathon runners over the next few weeks.  And a reminder about the next Club Championship race and County league race is the Rotary Quarter on 23 April.  Would be great to see as many of you there.   Ben R

Report:  Another great Bay Run on Sunday, despite managing to add a considerable amount of time on to my run from last year, I thoroughly enjoyed it and didn’t let my 17 year old son quite beat me, he had a good try! Less than 3 mins in it.

Lovely morning for the race with friends neighbours and family out in force, as usual there was amazing support from the Harriers at every point during the run. One runner I seemed to be running alongside for a while even said; "I don’t know how you do this with so many distractions going on, you know everyone!!"  So maybe that’s what slowed me down
J.  No seriously, it was great to see you all even Jim K made it up there with his sweeties.

There were really some great racing from the ladies, Serena knocked 6 mins off her PB, and Carmel knocked about 25 mins off last year and gave Heather a cracking race at the end, getting in there just, although chip times argue the seconds!!  Its really fun to have the competitive spirit here and there, love it!

Some of the ladies were racing the first time as a Harrier so well done to you.   I don’t think some were listed as a Harrier so I really do apologise if I missed you as it’s hard to see if not listed. And I couldn’t see any listed in the 10K. Although I know Carla ran the 10k, but probably not listed, anyway 48 mins. Michelle C looks like a 44 min run. Well done to you both.                                                                               Sarah H Women’s Captain

Report: Thanks to all who supported us along the half marathon route, especially those who helped Marshall and those who stayed behind after their 10k run to support! It's always a real lift to hear people cheer you on and shouting your name and even more of a lift when the chap running next to you remarks on how popular you are!! I didn't tell him it was the same people at the top who moved to the bottom at the beginning of the race and vice versa towards the end. I just agreed with him how popular I am!!

As you may have noticed, Jon has introduced a new line of sunglasses, red Deirdre Barlow’s with white spots for 11 year olds! They are guaranteed to stop anything getting in your eyes; flies, dust, wind etc. You can also get the superior model that come complete with windscreen wipers for wet weather use!  I believe Simon might be taking a delivery of them any day now, so get your orders in quick!!                                                   Gary W

Report: Well done to all Harriers who turned out and a big thank you to those along the course who cheered their fellow club members on.                                       Steve Shuck

Report: Thought I'd let you know how I did in the Taunton Vale half marathon last Sunday.

Taunton’s my town of birth, where I spent my youth; however the half is always on the same day as the Bournemouth Bay run.  Having done the Bay run a few times I thought I'd try this one for a change. The weather was overcast but dry; the route goes through the town centre at the start and then out into the countryside, generally flat with a few hills but not steep ones.

I ran it with a couple of mates who were both glad they did it rather than the bay run again, so it gets the thumbs up if anyone ever fancies a change. I even got myself a new PB, chip time was I: 27:57. I didn't see any other Harriers there, perhaps next year. I managed to do the race without realising I had my Harriers vest on backwards, only noticed when I saw the race pics today (what a numnut!).

Report: A huge well done to those who completed Brighton Marathon last sun in the high temperatures; Vincent, Steve K, Phil, Heather, Julie and Naomi,   It was a long day, tough in the heat but well done all.

Also some of the club were having a taper run over in Parley for the Wessex Autistic Society's Bun Run 10k, Kathy being one of the ladies there.

Best of luck to all those running in London this Sunday, a lot of preparation has gone into this one for so many of you. I’ll be at around the 25mile mark with my orange Littledown hoodie on so you can see me giving you a cheer!

The Rotary Quarter is the Saturday after …one more exciting announcement is that Emer had a little boy on the 4 April, Edward John Barnett,  Emer and Ben are very proud parents , all doing well!   Huge Congratulations Emer from the Club xx                                                                                                                               Sarah H

35th Paris Marathon 10.04.11 Marathon de Paris Marathon de Paris

Report: Just to report in with my Paris marathon time, I did 3:53:56 (10th April – same day as Brighton). Very hot, at 25degrees. Started and finished either side of the Arc de Triomphe, wearing the famous orange with pride. 32,000+ set off, 900+ non-finishers. Very crowded (Didn’t even manage to make it to my start colour zone.). Lots of ambulances and people horizontal on stretchers with oxygen masks on. With Pompiers hosing people down at various points around the course.  Banana energy stops (didn’t anyone predict how slippy that made the road surface for the next 100 yards?). Bowling along happily up to 19m then crippled with cramp for the last 7, but great sights and a great experience. The usual big city marathon story! Oh, and they were very concerned to give people their medals, then their T-shirts, goodie bags etc … then finally a bottle of water at the finish.                                                                                                                              Jim Cowdroy

Report: Maybe it’s my recent move into fatherhood so excuse me if this gets emotional. First I have to say how proud I am to be a Harrier! Not only was it another County League race podium for the men, and a great team turn out (18 men & 6 ladies representing the club), but it was also all the support from other Harriers around the course that made it for me.  It really makes a massive difference to have you all cheering us on, so I want to say thanks to you all.  At one point when the pride was positively bursting out - it lead me to woo hooing and giving big Jim Kerr a running high five!

Right emotions over, back to business.  Some great performances on the hottest day of the year so far.  Adrian Bonner lead the team home, Wayne charging through the field and was next in (did you start at the back?), then Billy Nixon a great debut run for the Harriers, followed by Peter Hellawell back from VLM exploits, and Stuart Stone the man on form!  The rest of the bronze medal team - Vincent, Steve Shuck, Jim Cowdroy, Barry Light, Steve Hutton, Paul, Ade, Jonathon, Robert, Mike Terry, Robin, Kevin Dowsett, and myself.  Great running chaps, and also well done to the ladies (will leave their success story to Sarah).

Next County league race is the North Dorset Marathon this Sunday the race is full but we have a team – so good luck all! The league race after that that you can still enter is Purbeck 10km, Wednesday 18th May, it will be great to see as many runners there as possible (its also a great opportunity for PB – flat/fast course).                                                                                                                            Ben Roscoe - Men’s Capt.

Report: This Saturday saw the Easter Rotary Quarter take place, and many again had a great run, this it just a bit more that a 10k, 8 ladies were listed and Nikki Sandell bought the ladies in  in a great time, it looks like you are back on form well done … I’m informed the Ladies won the Team prize!!  Go Girls, that’s fab!

Report: Another good day yesterday at the North Dorset Village Marathon, I ran it last year and really enjoyed it, it was good to see a lot more Harriers there in the morning. It was good to get going with a nice early 8.30 kick off. It is a lovely course weaving its way around the villages and lanes, with lots of support from the locals and more than enough brilliant marshals to keep it all moving smoothly across the odd A road we crossed. From about mile 18 to 23 the course climbs and climbs with every corner rounded another rise appearing, I guess we must have gone down hill a few times, though I'm struggling to recall any descents. Then just as you are really needing that extra push to keep you going there was a most wonderful sight...the Littledown Harriers Cheerleading Club, (which I didn't even know existed) Kathy, Heather and the rest of the cheerleaders (sorry my eyes were too sweaty to identify you all) were there doing a brilliant routine which involved wiggling their bums and singing. It was absolutely superb and easily my favourite part of the day and kept me going to the end. Anyway, I hope everyone else enjoyed it, see you soon.
