Littledown Harriers

OCTOBER 2010 UPDATE

*** Member’s ONLY Enclosure ***

Runner of the Quarter

Firstly, thanks to all who submitted a nomination for the Runner of the Quarter award, from your comments it was clear everyone had recognised and understood the criteria behind the award.

Many nominations reflected members appreciation of those in the club who give their time for instance club coaches and captains, so a big thanks from us all.

The majority of nominations were for individual performances throughout the last quarter, for those in the club who may have finished their first marathon (or even their 6th), members who had significantly improved on their times, consistently turned out to team events or encouraged others.

The Committee was happy to endorse the member’s successful nomination by awarding Carmel Ryan the inaugural Runner of the Quarter trophy for her improved running over the last quarter and dedication to training culminating in her New Forest marathon time - 44 minute PB and recent 1st for age 5k. Carmel will automatically be entered into the prestigious Runner of the Year Award to be presented at the next AGM 2011.

Well done Carmel, much deserved.

Just a little reminder, The Runner of the Quarter will be presented quarterly at other key dates in the Harriers’ calendar. There will be some flexibility around dates but the award will culminate at the AGM with the Runner of the Year being awarded.  All recipients of the previous year’s Runner of the Quarter and previous nominations will be considered, plus any new nominations. The yearly award will again aim to reflect a variety of attributes from individual achievement, coaching and/or work carried out on behalf on the club throughout the preceding year.                                                                                                                                                         Barry T

‘‘A HUGE thank you to anyone who nominated me for the Runner of the Quarter, I'm really taken aback, so kind of you. There are so many runners achieving fantastic results at the moment and facing real challenges along the way, that I feel really honoured to have picked this award up this quarter. I'm sorry Wayne, I gather it was very close!! You're young enough to have loads more chances and far too fast for your own good!!

Once again thank you, and thank you for being a club that encourages all the time, regardless of where you are in the pack. I felt just as much support when I was at the back every week struggling as I do now I'm feeling stronger and fitter. You're a great bunch of guys and Littledown Harriers is far more than just running, it's fun and that's why I do it’’.                                                                                             Carmel Ryan

Report:  Picture t'scene, like in good old t' days, country lanes, boy on t' bike, loaf of
t' Hovis…. then couple hundred louts come running past spoiling t' tranquillity!

7 Harrier’s completed the race, it was a stunningly beautiful route taking in the famous Gold Hill with the Mayor standing at the top in full regalia, cloak, hat and ringing a bell as the running went past, as if it were a warning that there were several more steep hills to follow!

Vicky Bishop lead the ladies back (5th female overall), followed by Caroline Martin (12th lady), Naomi Bennett (15th lady) and Hayley Deane (17th lady) - just.   Mike Neal, Wayne Jelks-Walford and I all finished for the men's team.  Mike churned out yet another good race, unfortunately cramp set in for poor Wayne half way around, but he can still be proud of being the 3rd person to the top of Gold Hill.   It’s 10/12 towards the Fidelity Award for both Mike and Naomi - with just Weymouth and Gillingham too.

Endurance Life Coastal trail series CTS 16.10.10

‘‘Based in Charmouth this thrilling course takes you from cliff top to beach and back again. As the UK's only UNESCO World Heritage site, this section of the Dorset coastline is universally celebrated for its beauty and diversity. Epic hills and cliffs characterise this stage of the CTS, incorporating the highest point of the south coast of Britain, Golden Cap. This is a trail runner's paradise offering breathtaking views, demanding climbs and an addictive exposure to the elements. The chances of you leaving this place without having fallen in love with trail running are slim’’.

Salisbury Half Marathon 17.10.10

‘‘This popular Half Marathon is one of several running events in a series in the Salisbury, Wessex area. A scenic autumn run on quiet country roads to the north of the Medieval City in the picturesque River Avon Valley, overlooked by Old Sarum Castle and Hill Fort. The undulating course has one short hill at 5 miles and a flat finish’’.                                                                              http://www.salisburyfirestation.info/

Report: Some 11 Harriers ran the Salisbury half marathon yesterday.  A lovely sunny day, scenic route, hilly with a killer at 5 miles that went on forever but there were some good downhill stretches as well. Post Gold Hill it was painful but worth it! There seemed to be some discrepancy between the categories of prizes offered and what they actually awarded – there was a men’s, a ladies and a fire service team prize according to the list.  The team prize was awarded to us and I did ask if it was male or female but was told it was the first 3 from a club (presumably of either sex!).  So we collected the prize on behalf of – we thought – the guys, Wayne, Steve & David.  BUT the first men’s team was actually London Frontrunners and WE Kathy, Naomi & Heather were the first ladies team – so sorry Guys – we want the teddy (already spoken for) AND THE CUP!!!! He he he!!                                                         Naomi

Report: Just wanted to say a very well done to the runners from last weekend, particularly Ryan Ford for destroying his half marathon pb by 7 mins in the Salisbury race.  Also to Jon Elliott who I missed out from the week before, who churned out another sharp half marathon in the Solent Race 1:25:54 on an unusually hot October day.  Well done to the marathon boys, Phil and Ade, and Barry who will be looking to get the hat trick next weekend with his 3rd marathon in 3 weeks!  Cheers,

Report:  Another fantastic run by Victorious Vicky....and look how close the following three were...yes we were definitely tangoed in  our orange...or do I mean tangled!!! We did get 2nd team on the day...but as...those BJs did it again!!  I think we can safely assume 3rd in the DRR League at the end of the year.... I think we tried very hard and did extremely well as both Poole and the Joggers have some exceptional runners...as do we...so next year...let’s get more of us out there if possible and see if we can show ‘em our true colours!!

Beachy Head Marathon 24.10.10

‘‘The Beachy Head Marathon is one the biggest off-road marathons in the UK. Formerly known as the Seven Sisters Marathon, it is popular for its scenic and challenging route through the South Downs National Park countryside’’.

Report: The official results aren’t out yet, but I can confirm that Barry Light finished his 4th marathon in as many weeks in 4hrs 33mins and I jogged around in a respectable 5hrs 12 mins.

It’s an undulating/hilly course – altogether 3500 ft up and 3500 ft down with no flat bits! The scenery is stunning and it’s definitely one to enter if you fancy a change of scenery and a PW! The night before the race was wild, wet and windy. I was in a B&B about 5 mins walk from the start and Barry and Patsy were in their tent – I think I won that part.

Race day started with a strong breeze and there was a torrential downpour about 2 mins before the start. The start is straight up to the top of Beachy Head which was slippery in parts but not as bad as anticipated. The route is well marshalled and the checkpoints provided a good selection of drink and food (no alcohol though). There was enough mud to warrant the trail shoes but the ground was generally very good. The first half was quite windy but OK. After a nice downhill stretch to about 17 miles the ascent started again, eventually leading to the Seven Sisters. All the runners/joggers at my level were walking up and running down. We finally made our way down to sea level to the final checkpoint at 22.16 miles where I was pounced on by a ‘nice man’ who fetched me water and a banana and made sure I was ready for the final 2 ascents. The finish was spectacular. We had just had rain and were running down the final hill when a rainbow appeared making a natural finish line at the bottom of the hill.

I think Barry was disappointed as he felt a bit weary after the build up of the last 4 weeks. I think he’s a superstar and wish him luck in Snowdonia next week, when the ups are longer and higher but luckily less of them. No doubt he will have lots of tales to tell in the bar.       - 851 finishers                                           Janet

Great South 10m Run 24.10.10

Report: WoooWeee, PB City!  Near on perfect conditions, flat course, cool but sunny weather, hardly any wind, and great crowds cheering all the way around!

Some great performances - Most notably Jim Cowdroy who broke the 70 min barrier for the first time. Well done to all my other fellow Harriers too.  A Great day all round.  (* It looks like they’ve added a dozen seconds or so to our times in the official results, was this the same for everyone else?).  (Yes)

I also had the pleasure of sharing the journey to and from Portsmouth with the decorum, and sophisticated rhetoric from my travelling companions Messrs Pugh and Ford.  The level of statistical knowledge, analysis, and commentary provided from the pair of pundits, was so extraordinarily immense and precise, that when fuelled with even more race facts on figures following the completion of the race, my return voyage with them filled me with such joy and excitement that when I was back at home I just had to celebrate with a well deserved chilled beverage and nurafen.  Gentlemen your mastermind knowledge of ‘Road race results in Southern England, 2003 to present date’ is … disturbing                                                                                                                     Ben - Men’s Capt.
