Tuesday 29th June - Meet 7pm (short run) for 8:30pm
start
Run
in the Dark - Friday 25th June - 9:45pm - Goatspen Car park.
Have you
ever wanted to follow in Ade Holloway's and Phil Sparkes'
footsteps when they do their ultra-marathons running through the
night? Probably not because your not that mad but if you would
like to join us for a little taster of what its like running in
the dark then please join us for a 7 mile forest run. Goatspen car
park is on the left just off the A35 heading towards Burley, about
1/4 mile from the A35. We'll meet at 9:45pm and head off at 10pm,
if you have a headtorch then please bring one, they are sold at
shops like Cotswolds, Oswald Baileys etc....LED headtorches are
best!
Should be a full moon so stakes and garlic optional!
(If
this "Run in the Dark" is successful we'll aim to do another at
the end of October when its darker so we can meet at a pub, do the
run then have a drink/meal after. So please watch this space for
more details of the "Harriers Halloween Hell Run".)
For
more info please contact Ade (adeholloway@live.co.uk)
or
catch Ade or Phil at the club.

32m Ultra
Marathon
Dartmoor
The
only true one lap, ultra marathon road race left in England and the most
scenic and toughest, with over 4,000 feet of ascents and descents, held
entirely within Dartmoor National Park.
REPORT
…Just to say very well done to all who took part in the Dartmoor
Challenge. I take my hat off to all of you in that heat. Amazing time
Heather and a well deserved trophy. Way to go, you ultra athletes!

REPORT
…We all discovered what Dartmoor was like!! And it was absolutely
beautiful on a hot sunny day....32 miles worth!
(Paolo went
off for 100mile bike just for fun!!!). Kathy wasn’t feeling well so was
sensible and stayed in bed....but she was even more sensible and joined
in the disco till midnight…
It was the
first time Barry and Steve had done a distance beyond a marathon so what
a fantastic achievement (if you like that sort of torture!!) for them
both.
We had a
great fun weekend away and would recommend such madness to anyone
wishing to give it a go next year. We could do with at least 4 ladies
so as to make a team of 3 as we would do real well. Food for thought!!
We got back
and managed to stand long enough to support the Poole 10k and saw some
fantastic Littledown Harriers steaming through in the heat...and I was
so happy I had tired legs and couldn’t run!!!

…Hi Everyone. If this event goes ahead next year
(some doubt at the moment) you should definitely give it a go as
I'm sure you would love it. Like Steve, this was my first Ultra,
and although it was very tough – with lots of ups and downs and
not much flat, it was a great event in a fabulous setting and
really well organised. I really enjoyed it, in that running sort
of way - as runners, you all know what I mean.
Heather (or
Helen of Dartmoor - an in joke) had an awesome run. I was
following her for the first 3 miles and doing 8.10 pace, which I
knew was way too fast and she was still pulling away from me, I
thought she wouldn't be able to keep it up, but unlike me she did…
Well down Heather, thanks for organising the weekend, it was great
- Sorry about my feet dangling down from the top bunk!

…Littledown ladies won two awards and the applause.
So, hats off
to the first four ladies of Vicky, Hazel Naomi and Alice (apologies
if I've got any of that wrong.) for picking up the 2nd place
ladies team award (8 bottles of wine), which I shall bring along
on Tuesday, unless any of you want to wrench it from me sooner.
Also
Vicky picked up the first ladies F45 award. You were thinking
that someone beat you Vicky, they didn’t…
Well
done to all those concerned and frankly to everyone who ran in that
afternoon sun. It certainly got the better of me. Did you notice how
the sun went in after the race finished - great eh!

South Downs Marathon
12 June
2010
In just a few short years the
South Downs Marathon and marathon relay have become classics on the
Trail Running calendar.
As you’d
expect a few from the club did the full Marathon.
|
REPORT
Hi All, Saab Salamon South Downs Marathon, Saturday 12 June 2010.
Well – what a marathon! Unbelievable scenery and some wicked
hills! The organisation was superb and everyone was really friendly
and helpful.
Having parked in the Queen Elizabeth Country Park area of the South
Downs we were taken by coach to the start at Slindon College about
half an hour away. We had parked at the finish. There were plenty
of toilets and drinks were available to buy. Those expecting to
take more than 4 & half hours set off first, followed by the relay
runners and finally those hoping for under 4 and a half hours. We
were chip timed. By now Julie & I were realising that we had vastly
overestimated our times having gone in the faster wave!! We’d seen
some of the hills from the coach and were wishing for climbing gear
– let alone trail shoes! |
 |
The
marathon is in 4 sections each having one massive hill climb and a few
smaller ones. We made one of the climbs over 1.5 miles (don’t forget
that’s near vertical – well....) but it was worth it for the scenery at
the top every time. Plenty of lovely shady paths and wooded areas –
where I think most runners left their mark! The down hills were
punishing and Julie had cause to examine the ground closely when she met
one of those tree roots that jump out to surprise you! Onwards and
upwards (and I do mean that most literally folks!). Then there was the
run through the field of little lambs (mummy sheep on the other side of
the fence), I did announce my presence with - a loud ‘vegetarian coming
through......but she’s not!’ (think Julie was wishing for a different
running partner by now) she got her own back by running sideways into
me in a panic as she thought she was being ‘charged’ by a pair of
lambs!! Apparently they had been ‘baaing’ loudly and ‘do they bite’?
Hmmm!!
Having
stopped for a look at the view (sure you could see the whole of England
from up there) and the model plane flyers – oh yes....it’s a marathon –
get a move on girls! We finally struggled in absolutely knackered at
around the 4.40ish time for both of us. For our efforts we received a
lovely salmon pink technical top and a medal.
This
was my 10th marathon, by far the toughest and the most
beautiful. Thoroughly recommend it – but do wear trail shoes unless you
want blisters under your feet! There were plenty of water stations some
with energy gels and the tops were taken off the water for you – every
little helps!

REPORT
Just to say
well done to all the harriers that were running on Saturday. The South
Downs marathon is a really tough event: off-road, tons of hills and in
total about 3,000ft of climbing. Runners are rewarded with great
organisation and views (if they are able to lift their heads enough to
take them in!)
There were 5 hardy souls from Littledown running it and they all put in
fantastic performances. Special mention goes to Barry Light who, after
his amazing Dartmoor run last Saturday, was back for more just 7 days
later. A brilliant effort from Barry. Also a really great run from
Pauline Woods who was 5th in her age group!
I was up there running the relay marathon & was definitely pleased to
only have to run for 7 miles....
